Looking after your rats

This section of the website is basic guide to keeping pet rats. I want to make it as easy as possible for new rat owners to access good husbandry advice.

Rats are very sociable creatures and need to live in groups of at least 2 but preferably 3 or more. They will require a large cage filled with lots of toys.

Rats eat varied diet, mostly a balanced dry mix as well as fresh food and veggies on occasion. They can eat most things so make good leftover disposal units too. Please see the feed section for more detail on diet.

There are lots of different types of bedding on the market and it can be hard to know where to begin. Please see my bedding and substrate guide for more information on this.

If your rat was to get sick it is important you have access to a good vet. if you live in Sheffield i recommend Broom hill who are very knowledgeable with rats. If you live further afield please contact me and i will help you find a vet in your area.
